Want to learn how to play Soldier: 76? Soldier: 76, also known as John Morrison, was Overwatch’s first commander and greatest soldier. We believe that the following two-part guide, combined with hours of dedicated practice is a solid foundation for any player seeking to command the ultimate commander during the Overwatch competitive ranked mode season 2 and beyond. After reading this brief overview with tips and tricks for the soldier, continue to part two of this guide which features in-depth ability information and strategy for competitive play.
Hero Counters For Soldier: 76
Who He’s Strong Against : In terms of abilities, Soldier: 76 is so balanced that he is quite strong against the majority of heroes. He seems to excel at picking off anybody that his gun can out-distance, as well as low HP, hard to reach heroes, like those that fly. (Pharah, Mercy, Symmetra and her annoying turrets.)
Who He’s Weak Against : Ballistic damage deflectors, those that prevent healing, hefty enemies protected by armor, and any hero that can focus Soldier: 76 to out-damage his rifle very quickly. (Zenyatta’s discord orb, Mei, Genji, Bastion )
Soldier: 76’s Abilities
Heavy Pulse Rifle
Soldier: 76’s rifle remains particularly steady while unloading fully-automatic pulse fire.
Soldier: 76’s main weapon, capable of firing 25 rounds at 10 rounds a second, and with surprisingly long distance capabilities at that. Compared to many of the other heroes’ weapons, this is a straight forward one, just shoot the squishy heroes in their squishy little heads and you’ll be the top gold medal holder for damage and eliminations in no time.
Tiny rockets spiral out of Soldier: 76’s Pulse Rifle in a single burst. The rockets’ explosion damages enemies in a small radius.
Soldier: 76’s secondary weapon, while it cannot headshot, it does deal amazing splash damage, perfect for punishing enemies that choose to group up. The cooldown is somewhat long (8 seconds), and since Overwatch provides this fact as a tip on screen to noobs that are unfortunate enough to die from one of your explosions, expect enemy players of all skill ranks to rush you after using this ability.
Whether he needs to evade a firefight or get back into one, Soldier: 76 can rush ahead in a burst of speed. His sprint ends if he takes an action other than charging forward.
Many beginner’s fail to utilize this ability properly, because at first glance it just seems like a great way to get to the objective a bit faster. After enough 1v1 close encounters, you may have realized that sprinting is the ultimate dodge ability.
Soldier: 76 plants a biotic emitter on the ground. Its energy projection restores health to 76 and any of his squadmates within the field.
He may not be a support hero, but if you’re spamming your biotic field, there’s a good chance you can out heal most of the real healers. An AOE healing field that can heal Soldier: 76 and most of his teammates to full health within seconds, I’ll cover this more in the ability usage section of this guide.
Soldier: 76’s pinpoint targeting visor “locks” his aim on the threat closest to his crosshairs. If an enemy leaves his line of sight, Soldier: 76 can quickly switch to another target.
This ultimate is the FPS dream. Imagine a world where you could close your eyes and left click, and mow your enemies down like the sitting ducks that they are, sounds too good to be true? Well it is, if your enemies decide to hide behind a wall you won’t be able to target them, so it’s important to keep those wide eyes open and chase the scrubs down.
Soldier: 76 Hero Synergies
It’s a-mei-zing how many Ultimate abilities go well with Tactical Visor, being pure damage, it’s compatible with everything! However you’ll get play of the game more often by using it with ults that boost your damage and/or incapacitates enemy heroes.
Allied heroes with ultimates that incapacitate baddies :
Allied heroes with ultimates that boost your damage :
Allied heroes with ultimates that increase your chances of survival while you pop yours (increased health/shield/armor) :
- Mercy*(I feel her damage boost, which isn’t an ultimate at all, is usually more helpful while you engage Tactical Visor compared to her ultimate ability. Of course this is not to say Mercy’s actual ultimate isn’t helpful, it’s possibly the most supportive ultimate in the entire game!)
Almost every other hero synergizes with Soldier: 76 beautifully, usually by providing a great distraction while you provide a flawless show of rifle accuracy.
Although Soldier: 76’s abilities may seem uninspired compared to the more creative heroes, regardless of your skill level, he is the most well rounded, self sustaining hero in the game. However, in the hands of an experienced First Person Shooter player, Soldier: 76 is true a nightmare to go up against.
